While Vodafone charge you $30 just for the prepay SIM card (you have to buy credit on top of that), you do get 100Mb of data and four weekends of free calls to other Vodafoneys with it. I find that expensive. Telecom is likely to be not much different.

[http://2degreesmobile.co.nz 2Degrees] have been shaking up the market a bit, selling $20 SIM cards with $20 credit (or $2 SIM cards with $2 credit), and have a 50¢/Mb flat fee (though someone on IRC said that the quality is horrific). Considering that you probably won't need extra connectivity during the conference, this might well be the better choice for some.

[http://cafenet.co.nz CafeNET] is the most common Wifi-provider in the central business district. While their volume-based plans could be considered expensive, they do have a week-for-50 offer. Also, while the T&C say volume data expire after 12 months, I was told by customer service that this is not currently enforced. (I am only mentioning CafeNET for completeness, and because they were very nice and honest to me this morning, refunding me for something they really didn't have to refund.)

Also, there will be a time-limited cafenet voucher included in the conference kit, so you only need to arrange net connectivity until you get your hands on that.
