Penny Leach has been working on Open Source Education Projects for more than 5 years, and has been involved in Mahara since it began in 2006. She was one of the 2009 recipients of the Google/O'Reilly Open Source Awards as &amp;quot;Best Education Hacker&amp;quot;. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Richard Mansfield is a core developer on the Mahara project. He has been contributing to the project on and off since its beginning in 2006. Recently he has been working on new features for the Mahara's upcoming 1.2 release including portfolio tagging, Moodle integration, and improvements to the files area.&lt;br /&gt;

Mahara is an Open Source web based portfolio and social networking tool. Originally funded by New Zealand's Tertiary Education Commission, it is now being adopted worldwide in a variety of educational and professional environments.&lt;br /&gt;

In the months leading up to LCA, an installation of Mahara will be available for attendees to use and become familiar, and interested parties can come along to this workshop, led by Mahara core developers Penny Leach and Richard Mansfield, to find out how Mahara works and how easy it is to write plugins for it.&lt;br /&gt;
