Moodle features workshop - Jonathan Newman, Stacey Walker, Jonathan Harker

Jonathan Newman is a Senior Moodle Developer, Project Manager, and Business Analyst at Catalyst IT. His over three years of experience with Moodle development include engagements with Intel Education as well as New Zealand’s Inland Revenue, Ministry of Social Development, and Department of Conservation. His primary focus is on supporting workplace training, and has lead developments of Moodle features including course completion, face-to-face activities, and global grades.

Stacey Walker has been developing Moodle at Catalyst IT for 18 months and is passionate about open source. She's supported various New Zealand organisations using Moodle including the Open Polytechnic, Department of Corrections and the Otaki based Maori University Te Wananga O Raukawa.

Jonathan Harker is a Senior Moodle Developer who has been Moodling at Catalyst IT for almost four years. He's supported a wide range of eLearning installations including the New Zealand Open Educational Resources Project.

Moodle is a Course Management System (CMS), also known as a Learning Management System (LMS) or a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). It is a Free web application that educators can use to create effective online learning sites.

This workshop for developers and non-developers, and will begin with an brief introduction to Moodle.

Developers will have the opportunity to explore how how easy it is to write two types of plugins (a block and an activity module) for Moodle. Developers will be expected to have a working installation of Moodle on their laptops from, and some PHP knowledge is recommended. Moodle developers will be on-hand to answer technical questions.

Non-developers will be provided access to a Moodle demo site and encouraged to explore the Moodle as student and as a teacher. Moodle experts will be on-hand answer any questions regarding the demo site.
